Things To Do With Teens In Omaha

Things To Do With Teens In Omaha

Because I have a young son, I often focus on what to do with young kids. However, I realize that pre-teens & teenagers aren’t going to jump up and down when presented with some of the options I wrote about in “Things to Do in Omaha with the Under-5 Set.” After talking to several teens in our family – and dragging my 14 year old niece around town for in person feedback – I’ve compiled a list of places to go that should interest your teenager in Omaha…

How Involved Is Your Child’s Other Parent?

The other day, I got into a deep discussion with a friend on parental involvement. We both agreed that under ideal circumstances it is best for the children. But we all live in a non-ideal world. With few exceptions, none of us came into adulthood looking to be single parents. My ex wife and I live near each other and are active in our kids’ lives. Sure we have our moments, but for the most part, we work together. My friend was telling me that there was no way she…

Today, I Am Truly Fearful

I tend to be one that knows where he is going. I have a map laid out and head out on a journey relatively sure of the outcome. Today…not so much. Last night, President Barack Obama announced that a team of US Navy Seals had assassinated Osama Bin Laden. While most everyone is rejoicing in the news, I remain fearful. Perhaps even moreso than before. Sure, I am glad we have rid the world of a terrorist who holds no value for human life. Paybacks are a bitch. On the…

A Strong Message About Bullying

A Strong Message About Bullying

No doubt bullying is an issue today. Perhaps I led a sheltered childhood, but I don’t remember childhood bullies going to the extremes that the bullies of today do. Maybe at worst, you were shoved around, pushed down and laughed at–and then it was usually over. Today is a different world and what is sad is that the kids are screaming out for help internally, but having difficulty getting it externally. Alye Pollack is a Connecticut 8th grader and she silently tells her three year plight. Please take a few…

Is Rebecca Black Really That Bad?

Is Rebecca Black Really That Bad?

Maybe I am in a contrarian mood lately (see my Charlie Sheen post) but with all of the brouhaha surrounding Rebecca Black and her “Friday” video, I have to say, it is not that bad. OK, she is no Madonna and it is overly autotuned. But despite what the critics say, for a 15 year old, it is not that bad. And let’s face it, there are very few with the talent of Madonna and who can now sing without an autotune. You do know who I am talking about…

Parent Of The Year Nominations Are Open

Warning: Please don’t try this at home! One of our readers sent me this email which I found hysterical. We all have done stupid things with our kids–it’s all about learning how to raise them. But I have to wonder what some of these people may have been thinking? Although, if I am absolutely honest, that whole Heineken grocery cart thing might have been something I dreamed up to appease a cranky grocery store kid!…

Vacationing With Your Ex

Vacationing With Your Ex

Could you do it? I was reading an interesting article about vacationing with your ex as a way to keep tight with your kids. Most famously, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore have vacationed together successfully. I have done it–once, by accident. I was spearheading a fundraising cruise on the Carnival Fantasy from New Orleans and it was supposed to be “my week” with the kids. When I called to check to make sure she knew I was planning a trip, she mentioned that it was no problem as she and…

Grrr. Teenage Girls!

Grrr. Teenage Girls!

To coin a popular teenage phrase, WTF? Can someone please try and explain what the triggers are that will turn a teenage girl from a funny, engaging, friend, into an evil creature that could not have been born–but spawned? This past weekend, was a perfectly good example. The local school district sponsored a Career Fair to get kids thinking about what type of career track they might want to pursue. We decided to check it out. We woke up on time, went out and had a yummy breakfast together. We…

Charlie Sheen: Single Dad

Charlie Sheen: Single Dad

Wow, I am conflicted this morning. Charlie Sheen does indeed have his problems–booze, drugs, hookers, and off the wall antics and behavior. He has had his issues with his ex wives, Denise Richards with whom he had two girls; and is now separated from his current wife, Brooke Mueller–mother of their 2-year old twin boys. This may not be the most popular post I have ever written, but I have never heard any evidence that Charlie Sheen put any of his children in harm’s way. There are allegations of abuse…
