We’re Moving Down The Street

Just a quick update that we are in the process of moving our office to a new location literally down the street.  With that move comes the hassles of moving technology and equipment. While we hope to not have any interruption of service, with Comcast and Verizon, you never know.  The service is scheduled to be on at the new digs on Monday (and deactivated at the old one at the same time), but in case something goes awry, here is my cell number (443) 221-1184. Of course with a…

Beer Pong For Teens?

Well, OK so it is not really “beer’ pong, but my 14 year old was at a friend’s house over the long weekend and she was telling me how she and her friend soundly kicked the collective butts of two other friends in “soda pong.” OK, it is not beer and at 14 that is a good thing. But I did a double take as it seems like it is a bit of pre-gaming for the real thing.  I am not naive enough to think that they will not drink…

Rocking Horse Ranch Video

Last month, we ventured up to the Rocking Horse Ranch for a weekend full of riding, hiking, wrangling, eating, and generally having a great time for the single parents and their kids! Having recently switched to a Macintosh form a PC, I am still new on this whole iMovie deal, but here is a valiant effort!

A Letter To My Daughter As She Heads Off To College

I may get in trouble for this (after all I am never allowed to tag her on Facebook), but my daughter had an assignment in school recently and I wanted to share. Well, it was more of an assignment for me as she wraps up her senior year in high school and prepares to head off to college.  The assignment was simple–have your parent write you a letter with some advice for the future.  They opened them in class and were able to share them (or parts) with the rest…

The Importance Of Insurance To Your Family’s Health And Wealth

In the past, this industry used to be shrouded in mystery, and it was very difficult to compare costs and benefits directly between different companies. With the emergence of the internet, more and more information has become available and it is now possible to compare different companies and find online cheap insurance quotes from your computer. Most people hate sending off a check every month or seeing a large chunk deducted from their paychecks to pay their insurance premiums. Whether it’s medical, home, renters, flood, or life, premiums can be…

When Was The Last Time You Ate Together?

I am willing to go on record saying that as my kids get older, all of their activities and friends tend to take away from the “family” aspect of our family.  That is not to say that we aren’t always there for each other under all circumstances, but it just seems more difficult to be the family that is defined in the dictionary. Yesterday, we actually sat down at the kitchen table and had a fantastic meal (yes, I cooked it myself and did not order in) and it was…

Rocking Horse Ranch Recap

Well, we are back from the ranch again. It has taken me a bit to get caught up with a seemingly endless pile of paperwork, but we are back, we had a great time, and some fantastic weather to boot! Each year, the Rocking Horse Ranch never fails to disappoint and this time was no exception. The trails were in great shape for riding, the entertainment was all changed up and fresh, and the hit of the weekend was the Reptile Man who brought lizards, alligators, and snakes for everyone…

Penn State, Children And Sex Abuse

Penn State, Children And Sex Abuse

I sit here stunned at the news coming from Penn State University over the past few days.  With each day the scandal grows and more people become involved. It seems that everyone (at least initially) is working to cover their collective butts. I have my own opinions on this and I will keep them to myself other than to say I am disgusted and appalled. As parents, our primary responsibility is to protect our children–period. It could be from falling off their bicycles, from drugs and alcohol, or from sexual…

Expat Children And Learning Foreign Language

We have several single parents who are from outside the US who are bringing their children into the states to live and many parents who are working outside of the US in a foreign land with their children.  Language is always a barrier.
While you decide to settle in a foreign country, you are already prepared to face the list of challenges coming your way. Climate, food, culture, etc. are few factors that are inevitable. Language, as we know plays a vital role in message transmission thus you would certainly…

What Do Your Kids Call The New Step Mom Or Dad?

What Do Your Kids Call The New Step Mom Or Dad?

Recently, a Facebook friend asked a question that evolved into a heated debate and I wanted to ask you what you thought. Every child has a mom and a dad–that is the way it is. Some parents are more involved and others are less involved in the upbringing of their children. We have already discussed that. But what happens when one (or both) parents re-marry or become seriously involved with a person who is not the child’s biological parent? What do you call that person? Does it make a difference…
