A Sobering Thought On Texting

A Sobering Thought On Texting

I have one kid driving on his own. I have another one learning. I am nervous. When I was growing up, I needed to worry if the radio was too loud in the car. We did not have car phones, cell phones, or smart phones. Texting was not even a word. But today it is a lifestyle. To be honest, I almost think that it may be more of a danger than drinking and driving. My kids routinely send and receive thousands of texts each month. And while in Maryland…

Amy Chua: Good Or Evil Mom?

Amy Chua, has been a name in the news for a few weeks now. She is the New Haven, CT mother with a Chinese heritage that rules her roost with an iron fist.  She first appeared on the scene in a January 8 Essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior (you really need to read it). Among the things that her two daughters have not been allowed to do are: attend a sleepover have a playdate be in a school play complain about not being…

11 Lessons To Prepare For Parenthood

I can only hope to be this creative at some point. I did not write this and tried to find the author, but was not successful, but wanted to share. I think we all can relate to many of these, but perhaps the most “relatable” one is the one that it is all worth it!  Can you relate? Please leave a comment and get the conversation started! Lesson 1 1. Go to the grocery store.
2. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home.…

A Drinking Conundrum For Teenagers

Happy New Year to everyone!  Last night, a group of us went out to celebrate the New Year complete with free cab rides back home! We all have kids of varying ages and the topic came up about drinking–over a beer of course!  In the last post, a good point was made to be neither too strict or too lax on the drinking front to successfully navigate the waters of teenage underage drinking. I felt it made some good points. But another topic came up and we could not…

And To Every Teen Must Come An Accident

My son has been driving for a while. He is a good driver–after all I taught him everything he knows. Yesterday, I sent him on some errands for me and on his way home the unthinkable happened. My son, the invincible one ran into the back of another car! He called me in a panic saying that no one was hurt and pleading that the other guy did not have a turn signal. I was so proud of myself that I remained calm, cool and collected. After all, everyone was…

Violence And Schools

Last week was a very strange one. My daughter is in 11th grade and witnessed a fight where a sophomore boy was beaten so severely in the school hallway that he needed to be flown from the school to a shock-trauma center in Baltimore. He was just released from the hospital and is home with multiple skull fractures, swelling of the brain and is blind (hopefully temporarily) in one eye. If you are interested in all the details, you can read about them at Eye On Annapolis. Maybe I…

A Letter To My Daughter

I am sure everyone has heard about the rash of senseless suicides over the past few weeks. My son is starting college this year and all of us parents are cautiously optimistic that our kids have been brought up to make the right decisions.  Life holds no guarantees, but we hope and pray.  A friend of mine sent me a link to this blog which included a “Letter To My Daughter“. She is going through the same thing we all are and her message is way more eloquent…

Love Stinks

Well, I may be a bit jaded and cynical myself, but when it hits my kids, I feel awful. My son has his first “real” girlfriend and things are going well (apparently) and then out of the blue, two days after their second prom–the dreaded text message (yes, you read that right) “I think we should see other people.” I felt horrible for him. She was a great girl and they were good together. As a parent, I thought he hit the jackpot–she was attractive, polite, not into drinking or…

My Son & My Wallet Go To Prom

My Son & My Wallet Go To Prom

OK, I own my own tuxedo and the last time I rented one was in 1990 when I got married. Boy what a difference 20 years makes! I told my son that I would cover the cost of renting his tux for the two (yes, count em two) proms he was attending with his girlfriend.  I seem to recall a price about $49 in my mind, but figured that inflation had brought it up to about $79.  Well, $200 dollars later… Granted, it is for two events, but the basic…

Dads & A Mother’s Love

Being male, for all of my life I never really “got” the whole maternal instinct thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids and would go to the ends of the earth to protect them and to give them any opportunity I could. But I have always heard that a “mother’s love” was so different–and I never got it. Till now. I consider myself fortunate in that my kids have all been relatively healthy all their lives. There have been no major traumas. But that changed on Super Bowl…
