Piercings At 12
A friend of my youngest daughter just got her belly button pierced. To make it worse, she did it herself! Now my kids are not into piercing anything, including ears so there is no interest.
I understand the allure of teenagers and young adults but this girl is just 12. Now I have always said that if the worst thing my kids do is color their hair, get a tattoo and pierce themselves, I am probably ahead of the game. But at 12, I am thinking way too young.
What do you think? Too young?

Getting a belly button piercing is asking for attention to your beltline. A piercing is put on, or in, or around, the bellybutton for people to look at, and the only way you can see it is if the clothing is down far enough to expose it. I’m EXTREMELY liberal, but still think that a 12-year-old shouldn’t have this. Why? Later on, when an ‘inappropriate person’ looks at it, the parents will get all bent out of shape. This can all be avoided…
i was 12 when i decided i wanted my bely pierced but i had it on my 13th birthday.so i dont think she was too young to have it done or thing about having it done , but yes she is to young to do it her self.as all teens want piercings its not anything to worry about 😀 x
Hi parents. i was 12 when i got my belly button pierced. a few months later i tunred 13. there is nothing wrong with a belly button piercing but doing it yourself is dangerous and could result in infection and scarring. just because your daughter wants to get her belly button pierced does not make her a slut, whore or anything else. if she wants to get it done, then she will. if you do not agree to it, she might do it herself and will ruin her belly button.
A Nine year old in my daughter’s class has her bellybottom piereced…. Way to young. I think around 16 to 18 is good age for your child to know about themselves enough to know if they permanatly want to damage their body.

I am 12 and have always wanted my noise and belly button pierced but i know i am to young i saw a 14 year old at the beach one time and thought her parents were crazy for letting her get it.I already told my mom i want them done but i want to wait until i am at least 18 years old.i think it wouldnt be trampy to get one at 18 but to get one at 12 thats just trouble to me.I mean its just trouble like everyone will stare and boys i’m not even going to go there.But yea i would say that you should wait till you 18 so you have something to look forword to and not already have it done.

There are multiple reasons 12 is too young!!! I am 14 and I think I’m a little young. There are tons of work put into taking care of a belly piercing. Also you grow a lot and develop more throughout your teen years. I think it looks crazy at such a young age. My mom told me (cause I’ve wanted one since I was 9!!!) That I could have it done for my 14th birthday, but I knew I would fill out more so I’m now turning 15 in 2months and am gonna get it done then(: I feel much better since I made that choice on my own, and its WORTH the wait!
I am 12 and will be turning 13 in September. I am a straight A student and I think school is important. I am going to get my belly button pierced on July 11th, tomorrow. If you are responsible and will take care of it and not go around showing it off, then there is no reason to not be allowed to get it. But only get it if you really want it. I am getting it for my own pleasure, because I think they are pretty and not slutty or anything. I am getting it for me, and not to impress other people.

I’m finding most people’s approach to this extremely uneducated. While self piercings are a bad idea, I think 12 is perfectly old enough to make decisions about your own body. A belly button piercing can just be something for the owner to enjoy. That’s the reason behind all my piercings. How do we know this girl doesn’t dress modestly? If she grows out of it, she can take it out, no harm done. I really don’t see the problem.
hey i think it is ALWAYS a bad idea to do it yourself unless you are like trained and stuff..
but i am 13 and thinking about getting it done next week and after what you said i got worried that it may be a bad idea but then loads of people said theyre 12 and 13 and fine so yeh i feel ggood now
and i think the only way it could be bad to have it so young is because you still go through growth spurts which migt make it dodgey
look parents i know you all think we’ll be ‘ruining our bodies’ but honestly all we have to do is take it out if we dont like it. And it is our own choice and you should trust your child to make the right decision.
People hear horror stories all the time about kids sneaking off to illegal places to get it done without permission and it getting infected and stuff.
so YOU say NO. But that is what will happen. If you let them make their own decision and say yes they will go to a legal place and be fine.. if you refuse they will go against you and ruin their body

heyy, im 14 years old and i have wanted my belly button piercing since i was 10! i knew this was wayy to young and when i was 13 i asked my mam and she said no and that i have to wait until im 18. i dont think that 14 is too young as its the time when you wear whats in (fashion). at the minute its crop tops; perfect time to show off a belly piercing:)no matter what my mam says i will be no older than 16 by the time i have it done. and i dont understand how anyone can think that velly piercings are slutty! its the same as an ear piercing just in a different place…

OK so i get she is 12 and i do says that’s a bit young but i believe that if her parents said it was OK to do it. that’s fine doing it her self is not OK having the parents doing it depending on how much they know is not the best but better then her doing it. you have to do your research on the part you are piercing and how easy it is to get infected. she really should have gotten it pierced by a professional. or waited until she knew she was ready. as for people looking at it…its not a tattoo tattoos you cant take off but any piercing can be taken out and with time heal over. there are even “invisible” rings for things like hiding piercings.

12 is a little bit young though. If someone is serious about getting it done, they would wait enough for it right? I think if you fight for it and wait, it becomes much more worth it 🙂
i want my belly button done, but my mum and dad also disagree – i think to do it by yourself is a little bit stupid, but if you have it done professionally it is no problem.
i’ve seen so many nice belly bars and rings, and i dont think that it is for people to look at – just something that you would do for yourself.
im 12 and im getting mine done in the easter holidays ill be 13 by then but my mum and dad are fine with it as they turst me to look after it, you you can look after it i dont think it matters what age you are 🙂

The legal age for having any body altering procedure done in the US is 18 (with no parent’s conscent required). There is a reason for this, little girls, (yes at 12 you are still a little girl) try so hard to be grown up way to early. Enjoy being young and beautiful, because before you know it, you will be an adult with responsibilities, careers and commitments. Learn how to enjoy being you, while you still can. I had it done by a professional when I was 21 and a few years later decided to remove it, now I have a huge scar where my belly ring was. Not worth it.

hey i am 12 i will be turning 13 in decemember but my mom said that i can have the decision to do that to my body if i want to.It will heal if i decide that i dont want it anymore so i am going to get it done.I think that getting it done at a real pericing place is safer and will not cause an infiction so i would let her get it done if she really wants it.
I’m 12 and in January I’m going to be 13 and my mum said I might be allowed to get it done then but I really want it done! My dad doesn’t seem too fussed about it really. I think girls should be able to choose whether they want to have it or not. It’s not like it’s permanent or anything. You can always take it out if you don’t like it. You just have to be certain you are going to look after it properly and clean it 2-3 times a day. If your daughter is willing to take on this responsibility she should be allowed 🙂 Hope this helped.

I took my younger sister this past summer to get her belly button pierced for her 13th birthday. As much as I wished she would have waited, I couldn’t tell her no because I did the same thing at that age. I don’t personally think that it’s just some piece of jewelry to draw attention to the belt line. I think it’s more a matter of self expression and a person’s right to express themselves. I mean, it’s only a piercing. I can think of so many worse things she could be doing with her body. And it’s not like it’s permanent. If she decides 2 weeks from now it was a mistake, she can take it out and no one will ever know it was there. That and I’m happy I took her to a professional rather than telling her no and one of her friends doing it for her and messing up and leaving her with permanent scars that she can never cover up!

Okay it all depends….if the 12 year old knows how to take care of piercings and is responsible with it than it should be alright…it doesnt mean shes a slut for having it done its her choose in lifestlye….and it doesnt mean your a bad parent….try taking her to get her ear pierced and see how she does with that….my 12 year old sister wasnt able to take care of her ears so she wouldnt be able to take care of a belly button one….dont let her do it her self….my mom had hers done and she didnt want it any more and took it out and i didnt even tell she had one done till she told me…im 14 and i want mine done soo bad but im afraid of what my mom would say….
Waiting until I was 18 was the best decision I could make. I was able to get it done without parents consent and it gave me a sense of freedom.
Everyone keeps saying they want a belly ring because it is “pretty”. Please do some research before you get it done. Even though I scrubbed mine every day it still got infected some and it took me a while to get the infection to go away. When I was your age I hardly took care of my ear piercing, so no way would I have been able to take care of the belly piercing. And I am not saying this will happen to you. I just want you all to do some research, because you have to make sure to clean it every day, even when it is healed. Also you can’t just go out and buy new jewelry right away, you are stuck with the one you get pierced with for up to a year. Mine took 10 long months to finally heal before I could get it.
Also another tip is to get it during winter a good few months before swimming season, because swimming in lakes and even pools can cause the piercing to get infected.
I’m not going to judge, I think belly rings are beautiful and can compliment someones look. They are only trashy if the people wearing them make them look trashy. For those getting it done, good luck! And please be sure to take care of it.

I think it is insane that 12 year olds get this done! I am 17 and I have wanted my navel pierced since i was 11, my mom said I could do it when I was 16, but I’m waiting until September when I wont be swimming anymore, just to be on the safe side for healing. I think if you want something bad enough there should be no problem waiting, because the option will always be there in the future, the only thing that might change is your opinion or you mat become more informed
Heyy xx I’m 13 at the moment and I’m getting my belly pierced in the summer, when I’m 14, I think it should be the person’s choice on when they get any piercings. 12 is young but at the end of the day her fault if it gets infected etc.. Her parents could’ve made her take it out and get it pierced properly when she is older. Piercing it yourself is very dangerous but her decision so… xxx
I think it’s your choice to do what you want with your body. I have been wanting to get since I was 10. Still haven’t but my mom and dad is letting me get a fake belly button ring. What bothers me is you guys is that most over protective adults think it’s slutty…
I would let them get a fake one first if I was a parent. So they can decide if they really want it or not. I wouldn’t pierce mine by myself. My friend attempted and made a whole in her stomach and got it infected. I pierced my ear though by myself, it was the only one that stayed in. The other earring done by professionally got infected… It all depends on the responsibility of the child…. Let your children make mistakes. If they don’t they will never learn.
im 12 and i really want my belly button done, but im affraid to ask my parents.they might think its slutty, whorey and trashy, but what does it matter no ones going to see it and and your body so u should be able to do what u want with it!!(: its not like we r asking if we can get a tactoo that you canttake out like u can with the belly button ring.
