When The Police Call At Midnight It Is Never Good News

To be honest, I count my blessings each day. For the most part, my kids are well behaved, polite, and seem to have their heads screwed on straight. Last night, I had my doubts as my cell phone woke me from a sound sleep. The good news is that there was not an accident; but the bad news was that there was a police officer on the other end of the line. It seems that my daughter (almost 18) was at a party that got a little out of hand…

Beer Pong For Teens?

Well, OK so it is not really “beer’ pong, but my 14 year old was at a friend’s house over the long weekend and she was telling me how she and her friend soundly kicked the collective butts of two other friends in “soda pong.” OK, it is not beer and at 14 that is a good thing. But I did a double take as it seems like it is a bit of pre-gaming for the real thing.  I am not naive enough to think that they will not drink…

A Sobering Thought On Texting

I have one kid driving on his own. I have another one learning. I am nervous. When I was growing up, I needed to worry if the radio was too loud in the car. We did not have car phones, cell phones, or smart phones. Texting was not even a word. But today it is a lifestyle. To be honest, I almost think that it may be more of a danger than drinking and driving. My kids routinely send and receive thousands of texts each month. And while in Maryland…

A Drinking Conundrum For Teenagers

Happy New Year to everyone!  Last night, a group of us went out to celebrate the New Year complete with free cab rides back home! We all have kids of varying ages and the topic came up about drinking–over a beer of course!  In the last post, a good point was made to be neither too strict or too lax on the drinking front to successfully navigate the waters of teenage underage drinking. I felt it made some good points. But another topic came up and we could not…

Teens And Alcohol

Right now, I am in in very frightening position of having three teenagers. My son is 19, driving on his own , going to college and has a job. My daughter is 16 and driving under a permit, and my youngest is 13. Since they were little, I have always talked to them about drugs and alcohol. My position was not “if you drink” but “when you drink.” I am not naive. I was a teenager once and I know they will. I may not want to…

A Sobering Reminder This Holiday

As we approach the holidays, there are going to be more opportunities to drink and drive. Do not take them, it is simply not worth the risk. We cannot afford to lose one more child and a child cannot afford to lose one more parent! The Transport Accident Commission in Australia has been running very graphic public service messages for over twenty years and it is working. On December 10th 1989 the first TAC commercial went to air. In that year the road toll was 776; by last year it…
