Submerging
Yourself in Central America - The Underwater Scene When travelers conjure up images of Central America, they immediately
think of mysterious ruins and exotic wildlife surrounded by lush,
mist-filled jungles. Although these images are true, there are many
other facets to this fascinating part of our planet, one of which
is the world under water. The Caribbean coast of Central America
contains several of the most exciting dive sites in the world, clustered
around the world's second largest barrier reef, known as the Belizean
Reef (second only in size to Australia's Great Barrier Reef). One
of the world-class diving sites is Ambergris Caye, the largest of
the Belizean offshore islands. Another world-class site is the island of Roatán, part of the Bay
Islands, off the northern coast of Honduras. In both these places you can enjoy superb diving, expert instruction,
incredibly inexpensive rates, (especially in Honduras), and the
warm and friendly hospitality of the local Garífunas. There are
numerous other places throughout Central America where divers and
snorkelers can enjoy a unique vacation experience, such as:
- Placencia, the emerging resort area along Belize's southeastern
coast
- La Ceiba, the beautiful beach area with the mountain backdrop
on the north coast of Honduras
- Boca de Toros and Contadura, two of the burgeoning offshore
island areas of Panama
