  1. For the past five years, I have been going to a fantastic family camp in Vermont. Probably about 50% of our families are single and we would love to see more. It is a great camp because it has fantastic kid, adult and multiage programs.

    John,
I have been watching this site for years and really wish you would do a trip during the summer where all parents could attend. I would love to go to Turks but I cannot take my 8 year old out of school for a week. A lot of kids are back in school at this time. And, the cruise you are doing in April leaves me out also. Our spring break is March. Just do a summer trip where everyone would be able to go.

  4. Mary says:

I’ve never been able to go on a trip with your group but I keep holding out hope that it will happen one day. As always I hope for an affordable west coast event. I know it’s always been a struggle in the past to get enough people interested in doing something on the west coast but I know I keep telling as many single parents that I know about it hoping to increase the interest. John, thank you for EVERYTHING that you do!

  5. John says:

    Hi Teresa–

We will look to an earlier summer trip next summer but it will not be to a Beaches resort. The issue with Beaches is that during the summer (high season) the price is several thousand more. And it is not an inexpensive trip to begin with. We select that 2nd to 3rd week in August because of the price breaks and I realize that it stinks for FL, GA, and TX schools (among others).

I might be able to pull somethign together for this year — maybe July for a resort in the Dominican Republic or a non-Beaches resort in Jamaica or the Bahamas; but will definitely look for one for next summer!

    Thanks
    John

I would love to go on one of your trips but they all seem very expensive! Being a single parent I do have to pinch pennies. But if there was something a little more affordable I might be able to join you one day!! Jenna in NJ

  7. Donna says:

I am interested in the Alaska 2012 cruise, what cruise line would that be on? I would suggest a summer trip to Niagara Falls Canada for a long weekend.

  8. Kimberlee says:

I also vote for West Coast, and cheaper. I am in California and things like the Rocking Horse Ranch and other trips seem great…but with two kids the airfare kills me. We are also a Mid August start for school, so Beaches trips are out. I’d like to see some cruises that aren’t so pricey. I would have loved the bike and barge but already had vacation booked for that year. For those of you going on the Harry Potter Fan Tour, we went (not with SPT) in 2007 and had the BEST time. Top on our list of places we want to go are:
    1)Egypt
    2)Iceland
    3)Alaska (cruise, land or cruisetour)
    4)Scandinavian area
    Happy Travels everyone!

  9. Anne Fox says:

I am in California and would love to see something in Seattle or Alaska.. Honestly some of the trips seem really high in price to me… Wow… Anne

  10. maegan says:

I have my heart set on Costa Rica (relatively inexpensive too), Grand Canyon or a Washington DC trip in the next few years. We are based in California too so the airfare out to the east coast makes most of the past trips out of my price range. Some of the Costa Rica resorts have cheaper rates for part of summer and I would think flights from east and west coast would be similar. We really want to zipline through a rainforest!

  11. Jill says:

I would love to go to Hawk’s Caye Resort in Florida, or Breezes in Curacao, which is much more reasonable than Beaches in Turks & Caicos (which I would try to go on but it is way, way over my budget). Curacao is out of range of the “hurricane belt” which is another consideration. I’m casting another vote for a July or early August trip, which is when I plan to vacation this year due to the school schedules. Thanks!

  12. Jennifer says:

What about New York City around Christmas? West coast would be great either northern for the Twilight fans or so many California options. Also what about one of the western national parks ? Zion, Lake Powell, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon… I live in Branson, so would not be interested in a trip here, but is a fun family local

  13. Heather says:

My child (9 y/o) would like to go to Europe,Ireland,a cruise, Texas, Williamsburg,Virginia, Italy.

I was looking ahead to find trips for 2012. It would take me that long to gather the funds.

  14. John says:

    Hi Anne—

We have had a few trips out west and did an inexpensive cruise out of Los Angeles, but they were not terribly well attended. We did a weekend trip to Seattle once and a Twilight Themed trip last year to the Pacific Northwest. We are looking into Alaska for next summer (2011). Please stay tuned!

    John

  15. John says:

    Hi Maegan–

We have looked at CR trips in the past but they ended up being canceled for lack of interest. Maybe it is time to revisit! We will be having a DC/Baltimore long weekend trip soon (not sure of the dates yet) which can be extended to make it make more sense for the west coast people. We also have done white water rafting in the past (sort of a Grand Canyon deal) and will likely revisit that this summer too!
    John

  16. John says:

    Hi Jill–

Hawks Caye might be a great Idea. I will give them a call to see about their group policies. Breezes is a similar product to Beaches and the ABC islands are out of the danger zone (so they say) for hurricanes. But depending on the resort, they are priced competitively to Beaches. Turks happens to be Beaches “flagship” property hence the higher price. In the past, we have gone to Boscobel in Jamaica and Sand Bay in Negril and there is a significant difference in pricing. Let me revisit Breezes and see wht I can come up with for the future.

    Thanks for the suggestion

  17. John says:

Branson is awesoma dna on our radar. We did a New York holiday weekend a few years back and will look into that again–maybe extending it a bit longer optionally. We are also re-looking into a whitewater/nat;l parks rafting trip in the summer.

    Thanks for some great suggestions!

  18. John says:

As the economy improves, we will be offering a moderate cost European trip. We do two to three cruises a year, so stay tuned on those and a DC/Baltimore trip is in the works–which can be individually extended to cover WIlliamsburg.

    Great suggestions!

    John

  19. John says:

Niagra Falls sound like a winner. I will put that on the list for sure. I am not sure the cruise line. Princess (IMHO) is the best line for Alaska since they own their lodge, railcars, and have a great reputation. My concern is that they are not the least expensive and they tend to be an older crowd–not the blue haired group, but slightly older than you woudl see on NCL, Carnival or Royal Caribbean.

  20. Jen says:

    John,
I found a really affordable weekend cruise on Bahamas Celebration–not as upscale as NCL or RC, but fun, nonetheless. Celebration may have cruises to other destinations, too, and perhaps of varying duration. Just a thought!!

  21. Jen says:

A weekend in NYC to a kid-friendly Broadway show would be fun, too!

  22. Colleen says:

Please, something for LITTLE kids too. If you are picking a cruise ship, pick one with a baby nursery. Hotels/resorts that cater not just to families, but families with SMALL kids/babies. We need to travel too.

  23. Jacqueline says:

An affordable NYC long weekend trip around columbus or veteran’s day would be great.
John, check out the Radio City Apartments
    http://www.radiocityapartments.com/
I’ve heard terrific things about this hotel. Very reasonably priced, clean and close to theatre district.

What about Quebec City during their Winter Festival?

I second the Niagra Falls trip! I was looking into taking the kids there this summer! I was going to mention that earlier but I thought it would be considered weird for single parents to go to what used to be the prime honeymoon destination for New Englanders.

I would love to see a trip to the West Coast to include the San Diego Zoo!

    Jacqueline

  24. Jenn says:

I love the Niagara Falls idea — Jamaica would also be great. We are in Texas, so a weekend at the ranch is impossible due to airfare — how about a dude ranch or something centrally located??

  25. John says:

Hi Colleen– Most cruise ships today will take the infants and have separate areas–not newborns, and they don;t do diapers, but I think you woudl be surprised. But definately a good suggestion. Thanksk

  26. John says:

    Hi Jen-
I am familiar with that ship and have some reservations about using them for a supplier. Granted they were a year or so ago–I will check back with the USCG and the CDC to see if their report card has improved. Thanks
    John

  27. John says:

NYC has been done and will be done again!

    John

  28. John says:

    Hi Jacqueline–

Quebec is a wonderful city and a great idea. WIll check out the RC Apts. The issue with NYC on holidays is that it gets soo expensive. BUt definately worth a look.

    Thaknks

  29. John says:

    Hi Jenn–

We may be headed back to Jamaica next summer–stay tuned. We tried a ranch (more of a real working dude ranch) in Colorado a few years back and there was very little interest. But nothighn says we can;t try it again! LEt me see what is around. DO you know of any or can you recommend one that you have heard about?

  30. Gina says:

    Hi John,
I would love to take my son to France or any part in Europe. We love the museums and walking to the sites while looking at the landscape. I see you have a cruise but cruises are not for everyone.
    Thanks for reading this.
    Gina

  31. Tracey says:

    Hi John
I too would be interested in joining your group on one of your excursions but I am coming from Canada (Ontario) and find the prices a bit out of my price range. Do you happen to know any other Canadian single moms looking to travel with another family? Just thought I would ask.. Suggestion for trips would be a cruise on the new Oasis of the Seas.. I hear it is a real winner..

  32. Name (required) says:

I don’t know about now. But last year I looked into Oasis of the Seas and it was more than double another cruise going to most of the same island.

  33. John says:

Yes, the Oasis (and now the Allure and the Epic-NCL) are the new kids on the block so they do command a premium.

  34. Deidre says:

I saw someone was interested in going to Iceland. I have been wanting to go there forever, but have been waiting for my son to get old enough for that trip (he is 9 now.)A good time to see the puffins is in August…Anyone have any advice?

  35. Lillian says:

    Good morning John,
I am a single parent with only one child. I have been looking at your site for a couple of years now, trying to figure out how to afford one of your trips.I agree with some of the other comments, in that it is very tough for a single parent to come up with all of that money on their own, IN ADDITION to all of the other financial obligations we have to deal with on our own.

I definitely second the Niagara Falls weekend, and many more vacation dates that center around the children being out of school, or even just a long weekend instead of a whole week. Unfortunately, all schools DO NOT take Spring Break in April.

I would love to see some trips to the big water parks (i.e. Schlitterbaughn, Blizzard Beach and Kalahari), as my son is truly a water baby/boy.

Thanks for all you do on your site for so many of us with no other travel options!!!

  36. Doreen says:

    Hi John,

My daugther & I would love to visit Ireland. (of course this is something I’ll need to save up for over the next few years).
It would also be great to see maybe some of the cheaper cruises (3-4 day cruises) to Mexico/Bahamas maybe.I think one of the biggest complaints from most of my single parent friends is that they just can’t afford a lot of these amazing trips.
With that said, we were able to do the trip to Jamaica last year and it was awesome! So far, this ranked #1 on our excursions and we are so grateful for it. My daughter still talks about the friends she met on the trip… and wants to reunite with them one day…
Anyhow, it is so wonderful to have a travel agency that takes the single parent into consideration – I’ve done a lot of research and this is the only site I’ve found geared toward the single parent.. ironically, the single parents are the ones that most need groups to travel with (in my opinion).
    Well, thanks for your support.

Interesting post, I like the way that you write. I’ve bookmarked your blog and I’ll make sure to visit at least once a week.
Also feel free to email me if you have some exclusive information on this subject, I don’t mind paying for great stuff!

    Hi John:

Would love to find an affordable option for the 3rd week in August next year. As you state above – Beaches was high and out of the question this year. I’d like to consider the Dominican ,etc). I see you mention July above, but I’d prefer August – kids are in camp in July. Off to Cancun this year on our own.

    Best Regards, Stephanie

hello there.. I am located in near Montreal. I have traved quite a bit with my son, and I am learning alot. lol
I just returned from a cruise in the caribeans with carninval. It was great, and afordable, but lacked other people who were single parents. I was in florida for 6 nights and cruised for 6 nights, and the whole trip including expences cost me 3100.
I am staring to search for a trip for Christmas. I would prefer to go to a resort rather than a cruise for christmas..
Perhaps if you already have a group planned, I can gather up a Canadain group to join you!

    keep me posted
