Bike N Barge In The Land Of Windmills
Yes, Amsterdam! There is no better way to see Europe up close than on a hike or a bike and Holland is a perfect place to start.
Our trip will take us round trip from Amsterdam and will include the beautiful, historical cities of Haarlem, Leiden en Delft. You visit the Keukenhof, where you can admire the Dutch tulips in their entire splendor. The windmills in Kinderdijk are a site not to be missed, and you will get the opportunity to admire the famous delft ware. In addition to this, we will visit the parliament buildings in the capital of The Hague. And at the end of our trip back in Amsterdam, you will go for a round trip tour of the canals and have the opportunity to visit the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh museums.
But this is not your regular escorted bus tour. We will be biking or barging our way! Since the Netherlands is so flat, this
is a great trip for the casual cyclist–no training regimen required. And if you get tired or just don’t feel like biking, hop on the barge and watch the wonders of Holland pass you.
Amsterdam is typically one of the most affordable countries in terms of flights from the US. Airfare and insurance is not included however, depending on the response, we may consider offering group airfare from JFK in New York.

About how much would airfare be from BWI?
Right now fares are running a bit high ($1100) but I suspect after the New Year, you will see a reduction. If I had to guess, from BWI (or another DC airport) will ultimately come in around $800 to $900
Are there any events or scheduled things for kids to do? This sounds like something I would enjoy, but I don’t know about my 13 year old daughter.
Shannon—
The biking is VERY leisurely and there are plenty of stops along the way with tons of interesting things to do. There will be limited activities on the barge during the days when the rest are biking. IN the main cities, there are some wonderful museums, the gardens, and the deft ware.
If we get enough people to wind up chartering the entire boat (not too many needed) we can really go to town and develop a program just for us. But we will definitely have some group activities, but the main focus will be on the biking and sighseeing in Holland!

Any trailer bikes available for a 5 y.o.?
Is a trailer bike an option for a 5 year old?
I have the same question… if I would like to go on this trip (and it does sound great) not sure how it is feasible with my 5 yr old. Are bike trailers an option here?
Along the lines of the bike trailer…I have MS with balance issues. Is a recumbent bike (three-wheeled) a possibility for this trip:
I apologize for the delay, but I wanted to get the right answers. Neither trailers or alternative (recumbent) bikes are available. However, there are companies where they can be rented and delivered to the barge and ultimately returned to the company. This is an additional charge of course per day. I will need to ask about the recumbent bike, but the trailer is 15 Euro per day. I imagine the recumbent bike would be in the 20 to 25 Euro per day, but I will find out for sure!
